During Sri Lanka’s clash against Bangladesh in Delhi on Monday, Angelo Mathews created history by being timed out, a first in international cricket.

Angelo Mathews Timed Out

The Sri Lankan all-rounder, a seasoned veteran, entered the World Cup as a replacement player. However, he found himself perplexed when Bangladesh appealed while he was taking a moment to address an issue with his helmet.

During the 25th over of the Sri Lanka innings, an incident unfolded where Shakib Al Hasan successfully dismissed Samarawickrama, who Mahmudullah caught near the boundary rope.

Mathews entered the scene at a leisurely pace, as if savoring the moment. However, an unexpected hurdle presented itself as he wrestled with his helmet, feeling the strap snap just as he was about to take his position.

As Shakib signaled for a new helmet, he and the Bangladesh team appealed for a “timed out” dismissal. To Mathews’ dismay, the umpires acknowledged the appeal and upheld it.

Mathews engaged in a profound discussion with the Bangladesh team and the umpires; however, despite his efforts, the appeal remained unwithdrawn and a disheartened Mathews had no choice but to retreat.

The playing conditions for “timed out” dismissals in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 can be described as follows:

40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.

Mathews, after taking more than two minutes to face his first ball, was compelled to make his way back to the pavilion in response to the appeal.

In international cricket, for the first time ever in men’s or women’s matches, a batsman was dismissed by the “timed out” rule. This groundbreaking occurrence marks a significant moment in the sport’s history.
